A Window to the Fatherland
Thursday 23 August 2018

We begin tonight’s program with Dr Alireza Nourizadeh reading one of his poems from the book of his collected works.

Then with our special guest of every Thursday, Dr Mohsen Sazegara, we will discuss the following latest news and current affairs of Iran and the Middle East region:

Khamenei replaces the commanders of Iran’s armed forces as at the same time Iran’s airforce reveals a new fighter jet which it claims has been fully produced by its own industries.

Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh:

We seem to lack bold and challenging journalists in the Iran of today to advocate social change.

Dr. Mohsen Sazegara:

The current Constitution of Iran actually in words provides the possibility of social change in Iran and it was on that basis that Mohammad Khatami won the presidency by a popular vote 20 years ago.

However, at the same time, the unelected bodies within the Islamic republic regime act as a deep state and a parallel force along the elected governments and at the end of the day their decisions and policies rule over Iran, with Khamenei as their leader.

However, in the case of Khatami’s administrations, we can only blame Khamenei for half of why the reformist movement failed. The other half of blame must be attributed to Khatami’s dithering and timid character and the treason of the loyal opposition group, the Mujaheddin of Islamic Revolution.

The Europeans eventually will not risk the loss of the US markets by siding with the Iranian regime in their current dispute with Washington over the future of the nuclear deal.

For his part Khamenei is timid and wise enough not to involve Iran in a war whose outcome will be nothing short of a disaster for his regime and Iran.

However, in reality, the devastating policies that his regime is following in the region is nothing short of a war between Iran and its Arab neighbours.
